A small beagle named Shiloh was owned by a mean man named Judd Travers. Shiloh escapes and is found by the main character a boy named Marty.
Marty had to keep Shiloh in a pen so no one, not even his family, knew about him. Marty's family was very poor so Marty had to slip food from his own dinner to Shiloh. This was very hard on both Shiloh and Marty.
One time while Shiloh was taking a walk with Marty and they were resting, Marty's mom ran up and Marty had to tell his mom all his story from beginning to end.
One night Marty woke up to a faint yelp and bark from Shiloh. Only him and his dad heard it. They ran up the hill and saw a terrible scene. Shiloh was laying down with a bad bite mark on him. A German shepherd that was owned by a was neighbor trotting carelessly away.
After that Marty and Judd arranged for Marty to work for Judd so he could buy Shiloh for him to keep.
A little while after that, Marty bought Shiloh and they lived happily ever after.
