- Everyone has to go to the celebration of twelve where each twelve year old learns what job they have for the rest of their life.

- The giver is giving Jonas' first memory of him going sledding in the snow and he can see colours.
- Jonas asks the Giver where people go when they get released. The Giver makes him watch a video of a release this mourning. Jonas learns that releasing means killing.
- Jonas and the Giver made a plan to escape the community, but the Giver cannot come because he is too old and has to take care of the community. So Jonas gets some food and water. He also takes Gabriel, a baby boy who has been staying with his family. Gabriel might be released because he cries a lot. Jonas travels at night with his fathers bike with Gabriel, and escapes.
