  • Welcome to Rome! Rome was named after Romulus, who was raised by wolves with his twin brother Remus. When it was time to name a city that they had created they had a battle, and Romulus won, hence the name Rome.

  • Gladiator fights were always a big deal in Ancient Rome. They took place in the Colosseum, a huge arena. Gladiators would fight other gladiators, sometimes to the death. Other times it would be wild animals. These events were paid for by the emperor.
  • The Ancient Romans were great architects. Along with the Colosseum, the Romans created Aqueducts, long stone channels that brought clean water from far away. They also had a great road system.
  • The Romans religion was based on the pantheon, or a group of many gods. These gods had Roman names and were believed to control areas of Roman life. For example, Mars was the god of war and Neptune was the god of the sea.
  • Rome had a republican government, meaning the citizens voted for their leaders, but only free adult men were citizens and not all citizens were equal. There were the wealthy patricians, the landowners with lots of power in the government. Then there was the under-represented plebeians that were mainly farmers.
