  • In Athens, education for girls was:Mothers and slaves taught the girls how to clean and do housework
  • Now I will teach you how to read!
  • Yay!
  • For boys, until the age of 6-7, their mothers or slaves would teach them
  • YAY! SCHOOL!
  • Boys age 6-14 went to school.
  • CHARGE!
  • Boys age 15-18 trained.
  • IRON! GET YOUR IRON HERE!

  • When age 19-21, they could find a job or fight in the army.
  • CLOTHING FOR SALE!
  • I need some new clothes...
  • HELLO TRAVELER! I WILL HELP YOU BRING YOUR ITEMS TO THE TRADE CENTER!

  • But by 20, almost every Athenian man had a job.
  • Spartan babies were tested at birth to see If they were strong enough. If they weren't, they'd be left on a mountain to die.

  • At age 6 or 7, young boys would be taken from their families to be trained.
  • A ages 6-7, girls would train. This included fighting and dancing. Not to fight, but for giving birth when older.
  • Between ages 18-20, Spartan boys would take a difficult skills test alone in the woods.
  • By age 18, most women were married with children. Their husbands could be two or even three times their age!
  • When men were age 60, they could retire from the military.
  • Finally, I'm done with war and can be with my wife and children.
