  • Did you ever wonder how physical weathering happened in different ways ? well your about to find out.
  • First physical weathering could happen in the cold. For example you need a place that could make water freeze and melt. This happens when the sun can melt something then it can freeze back up again just like this picture. This is called Frost wedging.
  • Lets say there is a burrowing animal well that animal can break rocks and make sediments fly around and that causes physical weathering. That is called Biological Activity.
  • Another thing that can break rocks are Salt crystals. This would happen at a shoreline and also in arid regions. This happens when water gets on a rock with salt and the salt dissolves in the rocks cracks. As the water starts to dissolve salt crystals begin to form. the salt crystals then start to expand pushing against the rocks and eventuallybraking them apart.
  • well if you don't know what sheeting is it also goes by another name exfoliation. Sheeting happens in places huge masses of igneous rocks like this picture. This happens when the processof removing overlaying part of the rock. As the pressure of the rock is released the rock expands causing the layers of the rock to crack. Then the layering rock is falling off due to continues weathering.
  • Now the last process of Physical weathering is Thermal expansion. This happens when minerals are released to other temp ranges, they start to expand and contract. Rapid temp can cause fluctuations for instance day and night cycles can cause the rocks grains to expand and contract. The rocks grain can be squeezed from its surface and can form to relive stress.
