Storyboard Text

  • What that smell?
  • It's so stink!
  • Oh, I will sprinkled lime throughout the house. I'm sorry.
  • Miss Emily, we received a complain about the stinky smell in your house.
  • The story begins during Miss Emily Grierson's magnificent funeral. Except for her servant, no one has gone to her house in ten years. Since 1894, when the municipality agreed not to bill Miss Emily for taxes, the town has enjoyed a particular connection with her. But the "newer generation" was dissatisfied with this arrangement, so they paid Miss Emily a visit and tried to persuade her to settle the loan. She refused to admit that the previous arrangement might no longer be viable, and she absolutely refused to pay.
  • Thirty years ago, the tax collectors had an odd meeting with Miss Emily about a terrible stench at her house. This was around two years after her father died, and not long after her partner had vanished from her life. In any case, the stink grew stronger, and complaints were filed, but the authorities refused to address Emily about the situation. So they sprinkled lime throughout the house till the scent was gone.
  • When Emily's father died, everyone felt bad for her. He abandoned her with the house but no money. Emily refused to accept his death for three days. The village didn't think she was "mad back then," but assumed she simply didn't want to let go of her father.
  • The novel then goes back in time to tell us that not long after her father's death, Emily begins dating Homer Barron, who is in town on a sidewalk-building job. The town strongly opposes the affair and sends Emily's cousins to town to put an end to it.
  • Emily is observed buying arsenic at the drugstore one day, and the village believes Homer is giving her the shaft and that she intends to commit suicide.
  • They believe she and Homer are going to marry after she buys a variety of men's goods.
