- Doctor! Hello I am Mr inks grand child. Will my grandpa be okay? What happened to him?
- Hi there! Yes your grandfather will be okay! He had a respiratory failure.
- What is a respiratory failure?
- A respiratory failure is when your blood doesn't have enough oxygen or too much carbon dioxide to give to the body. Sometimes . you can have both problems.
- Oh my god! Is there a cure? I am scared!
- Of course there is a cure!!
- Whats the cure?
- Doctors usually use the method of delivering oxygen to the lungs so the respiratory system can go back to work. As well as medicines and antibiotics to treat the infection and diuretics so that fluid is reduced from the body. Oxygen therapy and a ventilator is a must.
- I have one last question, what does the respiratory system do?
- Your respiratory system is the network of organs which let you breathe and absorb oxygen. It also cleans waste gases, such as carbon dioxide from your blood. There is one last thing you should know, inhalation and exhalation.
- Inhalation and exhalation is how we breathe. Inhalation is when the diaphragm and the external inter-costal muscles contact and the ribcage elevates. Meanwhile, during exhalation the muscles relax and the lungs become smaller; the air pressure also rises and the air is released.
