Okay class be quiet. Acids are a molecule that like to gain electrons to react a stable state
Acids follows the octet rule which states that molecules will try to lose or gain electrons to get 8 electrons in their valence shell.
They get electrons by taking them from other atoms depending on the attraction force called electronegativity. If the electronegativity is greater more atoms are likely to give some electrons away and vice versa.
Good Question
what is the difference then between acids and bases?
Bases are like opposites of each other. Bases want to give away electrons in order to get to 8 valence electrons. Baking power is an example of a base, but you can name a few just by using your periodic table. Most common acids come from the halogen family or group 17. They are mostly nonmetals. While bases are more common which metals.
Also another thing that will help you with this lab is that when you put an acid and a base together they stabilize each other. So make sure if you spill on your self an acid or a base put the opposite substance on it so you don't get hurt.
Mia and José where about to do a lab on acids and bases to learn about how they react together, but before they could they had to learn about what they are.
Mia and José both didn't know why acids need to gain electrons. So they asked the question, "Why are gaining electrons so important why not gain protons or neutrons?"
They both understood why they need electrons, they asked the question, "How do they get electrons?" and "Is this why they are so reactive with other substances?"
José understood why acids are acids and he was very fascinated by them, and for the fact that some of them can burn through bone. Mia............well she got lost after her teacher said electronegativity, and for the fact that her teacher when super fast with the information.
José had no idea what is the difference between acids and bases, and well Mia..........was just done with this class
José was thinking that this wasn't hard to understand he just need to pay attention. Mia understood that unlike everything else in this class.
José already knew that would be a probability of him spilling it on himself. Mia wished an acid would spill on her clothes so that she could get out of class.
Mia and José did their lab, but probably messed it up anyway. So, they just put down random answers and called it a day. Mia still didn't know what they are learning.
Next day the whole class took a test on acids and bases the two were certain they would do fine...........?
This was the highest grade they got on one of their tests they were so happy...................... FIN
