In California, 1848, James Marshall finds a chunk of gold while working for a mill. The owner wants to keep this under wraps in order to protect the sawmill business, though word gets out about it either way.
San Fransico
Mill workers stopped working and started looking for gold. Many people left their families behind, promising to return from California with riches. This happened during 1849, which is where the nickname the 49ers came from.
The Search
Travelers came from other parts of the world as well, such as Asia, Mexico, and Australia. Most traveled to San Francisco initially, causing  major growth in the city.
The After Math
San Francisco changed to adapt to the gold seekers, becoming a place for them to buy supplies and materials. This also caused a major downfall in places like this once the gold rush died down since all the seekers had left them to be abandoned.
Seekers tried many methods to find gold, including using pans to sift through river waters. Others also mined through the sides of mountains. Those who used simple methods never found much, though when complicated methods were used, it was easier to find more gold. Some of the more expensive methods were building dams and using explosives.
California was left struck down by all the efforts made to find gold. Towns were abandoned, mountains had dissipated, and most of the gold had been found. The amount of gold found back then would be worth around $15 million today.
