Storyboard Text

  • This is John and his wife Sally. They are former slave owners, and they're very upset about the passing of the 15th amendment.
  • They own an abundance of land that was once tended by hundreds of slaves. It was bad enough for them when their slaves were freed, but things are even worse now that they are allowed to vote.
  • The 15th amendment gave all males 21 and over the right to vote. This still did not include women. John saw African Americans as inferior, and he did not want people like them voting for the future of the nation.
  • VOTE HERE
  • Why should they have the right to vote? All they're good for is picking cotton!
  • The government obviously doesn't care about our needs!
  • John and Sally continually tried to talk to their local government officials, but were turned away nearly every time. They were infuriated that the people they viewed as below them were receiving rights.
  • The 15th amendment was passed February 26, 1869. It declared that the "right of citizens of the US shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous servitude." While this did not solve voting discrimination all together, it still introduced America to a new right.
  • Even though this amendment did not include women, it still gave a voice to all American families. For the first time, African American men could walk into a voting area legally and make their voice heard.
