La Salle was a French explorer who went out to find new territory for France at the mouth of the Mississippi River so he set out with 4 ships and 400 people in 1685. Instead of arriving at the Mississippi River La Salle arrived at the Matagorda Bay in Texas with one ship gone in 1685. By 1686 many people were dead, only 45 out of 400 people were still alive. In 1687 La Salle and the 7 survivors left for French Canada but along the way La Salle was killed by the 7 other men. As a result, the Spanish became interested in Texas again and built missions in East Texas to reclaim Texas again.
