My vision blurred as I realized there was no freedom in this palace--in this selection. I was shaking. I was crying. I needed to get some air.
"No...no. I need...outside." The words tangled
Just like earlier, two men were stationed at either side of the door when I tried to run for it. One of them stepped in my way.
"Excuse me, miss, you need to go back to your room," he said with authority.
"Please...I...I can't breathe."
"I'm sorry...Lady America, is it? You need to return to your room."
"Let her go!"
"Open the doors."
A new voice entered our conversation. It sounded young, yet full of authority.
"She collapsed, Your Majesty. She wanted to go outside--"
"Open the doors and let her go. Now!"
"Right away, Your Highness."
"But--Your Majesty--"
I staggered outside, not caring if I looked ungraceful. I didn't get far before collapsing to the ground. I was so consumed with my thoughts that I didn't realize Prince Maxon was nearby.
"Are you all right, my dear?"
"Don't call me that! I am no more dear to you than the 34 other strangers you have in this cage."
"I am not your dear"
"Did I offend you? Didn't I give you what you asked for, my dear?"
I live a very guarded life, so, no I haven't . However, this worked for my parents and I believe it will for me, too. I am ready to find my wife.
This entire contest is ridiculous! Have you loved at all? Do you truly expect to pick a wife like this?
Speaking with Prince Maxon made me see that he wasn't some pompous brat. He genuine in his quest.
"That's unfair. You are all dear to me. It is just a matter of seeing who will be the dearest."
And what do you fight for, Lady America?
"I'm not fighting. I'm enjoying the food until you kick me out."
"Thank....Thank you for that offer."
"Ha! Fair enough. If you'd prefer, I can let the staff know you prefer the garden, and you can leave the cage more often. "
I told him a bit about how the other girls, his selection choices, had been fighting over him (and the crown). He laughed upon hearing that.
