  • Let's get the show on the road! According to past trips, we should arrive in California in 10 hours in time for your sister's birthday, with plenty of time to spare!

  • Hey honey, we are driving at 70mph and at a constant pace. Expect to be there on time!

  • Wow, it's been easy driving the last 4 hours! With barely any cars on the road, we can continue to drive at the same speed!

  • It's been 7 hours honey and we are almost there! No problems so far! We should expect to get there in 3 hours!

  • There's been an accident and we have to go a different route! This will surely slow us down!
  • Well, even though that accident may have caused an unexpected detour, we should get there just before the celebration starts!
  • TRAFFIC AHEADEXPECT DELAYS OF AT LEAST 2 HOURS
  • Worst day ever, ugh! We arrived at the celebration, but it's already over!
  • Essentially, extrapolation is assuming that the trends found in existing data will continue in the future. For example, if the existing data points follow a positive straight line, extrapolation would be expecting the next points to follow on that line.Through this comic, I was trying to summarize what extrapolation is through a real-world occurrence that I have experienced before. The couple decides to leave at a time they usually leave at to reach their destination. It has always taken about 10 hours to reach California, and with a consistent speed. However, after driving smoothly for most of the ride, they hit an accident as well as heavy traffic. This slows them down and causes this trip to take much longer than 10 hours. This was not predicted to happen however, as the trend of their driving speed throughout the first 3/4 of the trip indicated their pace would stay the same and they would get to the celebration on time.
