Storyboard Text

  • Long ago during the years 1240 to 1645 lived an opulent realm, called the Mali empire in West Africa. After seizing the Ghana Empire in the first year. The kingdom was initiated by Sundiata, the man whom centralised government, diplomacy and well-trained an army which permitted a massive military expansion that paved the way for the empire.
  • Mali began as a small Malinke kingdom around the upper areas of the beloved Niger River. Mali gained power through precious gold derived from west Africa and salt mining in Sahara. As well, control of the Trans-Saharan trade routes in the region. Mali prospered thus to trade and its prime location, situated between the rain forests of southern West Africa and the powerful Muslim caliphates of North Africa.
  • There came a king by the name of Mansa Musa. Reigned from 1312 to 1337. His ruling lead to new heights in terms of territory controlled, cultural fluorescence, and the staggering wealth brought through Mali’s control of regional trade routes.King milked traffic in gold, salt, copper, ivory, and slaves that converged west africa
  • Mansa built a horde to keep control over Mali. He divided Mali into provinces ruled by chosen chiefs. Being a righteous Muslim, he went on a hajj to Mecca in 1324. Unsparingly offering gold to the folk he met on his pilgrimage to nurture the empire. Built mosques and Islamic universities throughout Africa. Mali rulers spread Islam through such promient centres of learning as Timbaktu.
  • As we all know, not every story has a jovial ending. The Mali Empire fell off in the 16th centuryand was replaced by the Songhai empire.The Songhai gained control of trade cities along the gold-salt routes. This everlasting ancient african tale is to be sustained for eternity.
