- During the 18th century in Britain many people fell upon hard times. The economy was very unbalanced meaning some people had plenty of money while most people struggled.

- I DECREE IN THE NAME OF THE LAW THAT YOU ARE UNDER ARREST FOR OWING A LARGE SUM OF MONEY TO YOUR CREDITOR.
- What about my children sir? Where will they go?
- These people often owed money and when they could no longer pay back their debts they were imprisoned
- Other people were imprisoned because they got caught stealing.
- GET AWAY FROM MY HORSE YOUNG MAN!
- Even stealing a handkerchief could get you 7 years in prison and soon prisons became overcrowded.

- Dear Vincent,I'm leaving all my property under your care until I can return. I'm being sent to the strange land of Terra Australis as you're reading this. Hopefully I'll make it but the road ahead doesn't look very promising.
- The way this was dealt with was by sending convicted criminals to the British colony of Australia to build up the nation and get rid of the criminal population in Britain.
- Most convicts did not know how to read and write and therefore could not stay in contact with family by writing letters. This would've led to the convicts feeling very isolated.
- Once convicts arrived in Australia they were forced to do hard labour like building public buildings, collecting resources and farming the land. All of this was part of their punishment and therefore they were not paid for their work.
