Hey Amy, I've heard a lot about anorexia. What is it?
Hey I have heard a lot about anorexia. What is it?
I'm glad you asked. Anorexia is an eating disorder caused by social norms, a person's environment, and their genetics and mental health.
Well how do I know if I or one of my friends have anorexia?
The symptoms can be pretty broad, but some signifiers are calorie counting, obsessing over body weight and how skinny or fat they are, denying themselves food and denying hunger, excessive exercise, social withdrawal, losing emotions, and fearing eating around others.
Well that kind of just sounds like a health freak. What's the difference? Does anorexia have any real consequences?
No they definitely aren't the same thing! Anorexia takes a real toll on your physical and mental health, while being a health freak is just someone who really wants to get healthier. Anorexia can make you very thin which makes yyour bodily functions slow down. It also can cause menstruation issues, constipation, irregular blood pressure, and trouble sleeping, along with severe mental health issues.
Well how is it treated?
An exact cure or treatment isn't really known, but some psychiatrists think things likesupport groups, psychotherapy, medical monitoring, and nutritional counselling.
Now that I think of it, I think one of my friends may have anorexia. How do I support him? What advice do I give?
You should try to be supportive of him and try to help him accept himself, and tell him about ED support groups.
Thanks for telling me so much about anorexia. But how do you know all of this?
I learned a lot of it on a nami.org arcticle about eating disorders, and also learned a lot from a mentalhealth.gov article about anorexia.
