- Welcome back to Mental and Physical Health storyboard discussion panel second segment. I'm your host Maureen, today we will be discussing psychotropic drugs. Nice to see you again Dr. Sigmund Scott and Dr. Ebony Grant.

- Thanks for having me Maureen. It's a pleasure to always seeing your friendly face here on this panel discussion.

- Oh my! Dr. Scott thanks for the compliment. "You're flattering me but today you're the stars". The first question is can you identify four psychotropic drugs?
- Yes I agree with Dr. Grant. I may add Pharmacology is psychology and pharmacology put together. It is the study of drugs that affect cognition, emotions and behaviors.
- Yes I can. Four psychotropic drugs are benzodiazepine, antidepressants, antipsychotics and anticholinergics. These drugs are used for anxiety, depression, increase the activity of neurotransmitters such as serotonin or dopamine in the brain and psychosis such as persons who are diagnosed with schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder. Psychiatrists or psychologists are certified in psychopharmacology and are able to treat mental health illness with medications.

- Okay I think this segment needed a dictionary with all the scientific names you've listed. The next question, can you discuss the types of disorders that are treated with psychotropic drugs?
- Yes Dr. Scott but I can elaborate on the drugs. Antidepressants are used to treat Depression. Anti-anxiety drugs are used to treat Anxiety disorders, example: Beta-blockers they are used to treat physical symptoms such as trembling. These drugs are used to treat Bipolar disorder, Psychosis and Alzheimer's disease.
- First of all, psychotropic drugs are drugs that affect or alter how the brain works. These drugs are used to treat mental health diseases as mentioned earlier by adjusting chemicals in the brain. These disorders incudes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (A.D.H.D), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (O.C.D), depression and eating disorders. There are various types of psychotropic drugs that Dr. Grant listed earlier.
