- Dead Puppy
- "Why do you got to get killed? You ain't so little as mice. I didn't bounce you hard."
- Dead Girl
- "You stop it now, you'll mess it all up...Let go, let it go!"
- "I don't want you to yell. You gonna get me in trouble...I don't want ta hurt you, but George'll be made if you yell."
- Dead Dream
- "I think I knowed from the very first. I think I knowed we'd never do her. He usta like to hear about it so much I got to thinking maybe we would."
- "Then--it's all off?"
- We are approaching the climax of our story; tension is building between our characters, with Curley emerging as a threat. Lennie is bent over his dead puppy; hw has accidentally killed it. Lennie is worried George will be mad and won't let him tend his rabbits.
- Where Has Lennie Gone?
- Here is the climax: his love of soft things, his strength, and his inability to understand work against him and he accidentally kills Curley's wife. "The meanness and the plannings and the discontent and the ache for attention were all gone from her face. She was very pretty and simple."
- What's Going to Happen to Lennie?
- As the falling action begins, Candy finds Curley's wife and when George is summoned, he immediately knows what Lennie has done and where he has gone.
- Dreams and Entrapment
- Our story will come full circle in Chapter 6. Our characters will end up where they started; down by the brush.---Since Carlson's gun is missing, the men are worried that Lennie has taken it and is armed.
- "I guess we gotta get 'im an' lock 'im up. We can't let 'im get away. Why, the poor bastard'd starve."
- What Lennie faces:-he escapes, but is unable to fend for himself-he is caught and locked up in jail or an asylum-he is caught and lynched by Curley and his crew
- "Couldn' we maybe bring him in an' they'll lock him up? He's nuts, Slim. He never done this to be mean."
- "An spose they lock him up an' strap him down and put him in a cage. That ain't no good, George."
- "We oughtta let 'im get away. You don't know that Curley...gon'ta wanna get 'im lynched. Curley'll get 'im killed."
- Each oare entrapped by some circumstance and made vulnerable:-Lennie: his intellect and his strength-Curley's wife: her gender and her marriage-Candy: his age and his missing hand-George: Lennie
