- (Thoughts of O' Brien): I was twenty yards away from the Canadian shore, and instead of acting, paralysis took over my heart. What an idiot I must be! A stupid coward, because I fear of what others will think of me and how embarrassed I would feel to walk away from a war I don't believe in.

- Tim O' Brien showed what not to do in times of pressure and crisis. Others may see this differently and say he did the right thing by sucking it up going to fight for his country, but I see it as a failure to listen to your conscience and inner thoughts. He wasn't brave enough because he was too embarrassed of what others would think and that's what the problem is today with society. I now better understand we are too caught up with how we look, and who has the best shoes, clothes, and phones, but just take a look at Tim O' Brien and see where his failures got him. (hint: The Vietnam War) Tim didn't do the brave thing, that he so longed to do, because he wanted others to think good of him, and throughout the scope of the story, "On the Rainy River", he battles with himself and emotions leaving him helpless. Why care about what others think, when it's you life, your decision, and your choice.
