To comfort Helena, Danny and Larry tell her of their plan to escape from their arranged marriage.
"Tomorrow night, my dear Helena," he declared, “We shall reveal our cunningly devised scheme to elude the guards and make our escape."
"In the woods, where we would rest," she said, "there, my Larry and I will stay. Away from this town," she continued, "we will divert our gaze to find new friends and unfamiliar hearts."
Inside a theater on the outskirts of town a group of amateur actors are summoned by the director, Peter, for an introduction to a play they will rehearse for Mayor Thomas' wedding.
"Our play is called 'The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe'," Peter replied.
"Here," Peter announced, "are the roles we shall embody at the wedding of Mayor Thomas and his soon to be wife, Harriet," he continued.
"Say, good Peter," Nick pleaded, "state what our play is about so we can get to the point."
Hannah's father Edward brings forth a complaint to Mayor Thomas, insisting that she marry Danny instead of her beloved Larry.
"My esteemed Mayor, If Hannah refuses to marry Danny instead of Larry in your presence," Edward Pleaded, "I humbly request the time-honored privilege of this town, as she rightfully belongs to me."
