- Theme 2: Emotional Need
- Where did I buried my favorite bone???
- (1) That math test stressed me out! I think I failed! The rain falling makes me think about the wonders of nature.
- (2) I feel your pain and that's why I thought it was a good idea to fish by the river and reflect on your day.
- Ecotherapy Interventions
- Planting helps me relax and eases my anxiety
- Playing with animals reduces my feelings of anger.
- Unstructured, Imaginative & Exploratory play are an essential component of wholesome child development.
- Theme 3: Nature Deficit Disorder
- My parents are so annoying?!?!
- (1)You need to get out of bed and stop playing video games. We are going to the Central Park Zoo today.
- Nature offers a nurturing solitude. A Study of adolescents showed that when teens went to a natural setting after an upsetting event they can clear their minds and relax.
- Theme 4: Nature Smart: Paying Attention
- (1)Meet our class pet Mr. Rabbit. One of you will be able to take him home for the weekend!
- There are several interventions in ecotherapy that can help children and adolescents cope with depression and anxiety. Ecotherapy interventions include a range of treatment programs aimed to improve mental and physical wellbeing through activities that incorporate nature.
- Theme 5: Natural School Reform--Real World Learning
- I love playing with animals.
- "Nature-Deficit Disorder describes the human costs of alienation from nature...dimished used of the senses, attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and emotional illness" (Louv, p. 36). Parents can encourage their children to spend more time outdoors.

- An eighth theory of intelligence was added by Howard Gardner to this original 7 theories. It is called Naturalist Intelligence. By allowing children to take the class pet home for the weekend, it will teach them valuable skills about an animal's needs, and how to be responsible.

- Otherwise known as place-based education. Children learn better when exposed to different types of ecosystems.
