In chapter one Bud gets told by a woman that works there, he's going to leave the orphanage and stay at a foster home.
Chapter 10
Mr and Mrs. Amos's son Todd gets Bud into trouble, and Mrs. Amos punish Bud by having him stay in the shed that night. While Mr. Amos takes Bud to the shed Todd tells Bud that the shed is where the last kid that was there died, and now there's a big blood spot, vampires on the roof, and a fishguard  on the handle.
Chapter 19
Bud and Buggs meet again, and they decide to go to Hooversville. When they get there they are able to have dinner and stay the night. Buggs had heard that a bunch of the guys there were going in the middle of the night to jump on a train that leads too California.The train ends up being guarded which means Bud isn't able to get on,so he starts walking to find his dad.
While Bud is walking to Grand Rapids a car stops and a man named Mr. Lewis wants to make sure Bud is ok. Mr. Lewis then asks Bud if he wants a sandwich and soda so Mr lewis cana take Bud to Flint. Mr. Lewis takes Bud to his "dad" and waits to make sure Bud gets inside his house safely.
CAUTION!HUMAN BLOOD
Mr.Calloway finds out Bud is his grandson, and later Steady Eddie gives Bud his own Saxophone. This makes Bud finally feel apart of the band and makes him feel like he has a family.
