- Hazel moved in with the Walker family, who fostered her. There was Mr John Walker, Mrs Alice-Kate Walker, Nora Walker and George Walker. Nora was nearly 12, like Hazel, and George was 6. Mr Walker was hard-working and had some very strong opinions on things like politics, Mrs Walker was nice and sweet, she was also a wonderful cook. Nora knew everything about school, and told Hazel all about the boys, the girls, the teachers, and, like her father, she had very strong opinions on everything, George was very cute and he loved drawing, sometimes he spoke too fast and Hazel couldn't understand what he was saying.

- Hazel missed Frankfurt. She missed her best friends, Anna and Esther. She missed her old school, St Jozef's. Anna and Esther had gone there too. After Kristallnacht, she transferred to the Jewish Lyceum. Although she had made friends there, like, Margot, Elsa, Maria and Gretl, none of them could replace Anna and Esther. She missed Jakob and Mama and Papa, she hoped Jakob and Papa were alive and well.
