We are learning about Day of the Dead in my Spanish class.
Hi Gabe! What have you been learning in school recently?
It's a Mexican holiday!
What is that?
Day of the Dead, or Día de Los Muertos, is celebrated from October 31-November 2. This multi-day holiday involves the gathering of friends and family to remember loved ones and those who have died.
Día de los Muertos is largely associated with Mexico and those of Mexican descent. Family and friends gather to pray and support the deceased on their spiritual journey.
Family and friends gather at the cemeteries where they set up altars, know as ofrendas, for those who have passed away. Ofrendas usually include food, drinks, candies, flowers and candles that serve as personal mementos to those being remembered.
Wow, thanks for sharing! What an interesting holiday!
These holiday is celebrated over 3 days. On October 31, the children set up the children's altar to invite the spirits of the dead to come back and visit. On November 1, the adult spirits are invited to come back and visit.
On the last day, November 2, families go to the cemetery to clean and decorate the graves. During this holiday, it is believed that the spiritual passageway between the afterlife and those still alive is open, allowing for the deceased spirits to visit.
Another popular symbol of Día de los Muertos is the skull, or calavera, which appears everywhere during the 3 day celebration. Many people dress up and paint a skull or skeleton on their face. This holiday focuses on remembering the dead.
