  • So, you excited you opened your birthday presents later Aubrey?
  • *Chomp* Yeah, I guess *Chomp*
  • Don't talk with your mouth full Aubrey!
  • From the outside, 1455 Lake View Drive looked picture-perfect. The ivy, racing up the walls of the house, consumed the brownstone and the white shutters newly painted that made the house look like a home. Each night as the sun set over Lake View Drive, the windows radiated a warm glow so inviting that the house called out to everyone who passed by, beckoning them to come inside.
  • How was your day at school today, Joanie?
  • Joanie asked breaking the deafening silence at the dinner table. Joanie had kind blue eyes and dark brown hair that brushed her shoulders. She didn’t really fit in with the rest of her family. Her mother, father, and sister all had blonde hair and brown eyes.
  • It was fine. Science class was actually interesting today. We learned about this freaky thing called mad cow disease.
  • Aubrey- Joanie's sister- replied through a mouth full of burger avoiding her mother’s glare.
  • What's that?
  • Her mom lectured, her eyes meeting Joanie as her glare shifted to admiration. Her mother pulled her wine glass up to her lips and began gulping the red wine until the glass was empty.
  • It’s like when you eat cow meat it can get into your head and rapidly deteriorate your brain until there’s nothing left. The worst part is that you can’t do anything to stop it. Fucked up right?

  • Her father scolded, his hands gripping the table.
  • Joanie, Language!
  • Her mother snapped back, rage filling her eyes.
  • She's 13 Dave, she can say what she wants.

  • Joanie listened to the clattering of dishes in the kitchen as her parents cleaned up dinner in silence. Only moments later, she heard her father’s voice, his fist slammed into the granite countertop.
  • She walked over to the other side of her room and dug through her bag, pulling out her computer and placing it on the desk. She watched the cursor blink in and out as she stared at her science paper. Below her in the kitchen, plates shattered as violent words were thrown from her parent’s mouths. The tornado of fighting continued as she tried to focus on her science paper; an endless barrage of anger and tension shaking the house. She heard a wine bottle shatter.
  • Heavy, darkened footsteps rushed around the house and then there was a sickening silence. Darkness fell over the house as the streetlamps flickered on. She heard the whirring of her father’s electric saw in the garage. He always worked on his projects after a big fight. It calmed him down.

  • She checked the time and saw that her sister would be back from practice in thirty minutes. She needed to wrap her birthday present.
  • Science Paper
  • She ran down to the basement to grab the bag and tissue paper she needed.
  • As she passed by the kitchen on the way back to her room, she stopped to look, staring down at the shattered plates and red wine seeping into the floor, she felt sick to her stomach.
  • She ran back to her room and panting put down the bag. Sitting down she wrapped her sisters present. A knot of anticipation formed in her stomach as she thought about the excitement on her sisters face when she opened the gift.
  • As her mind began to drift her room went dark. She put down the present and walked to the light switch, flipping it up and down, realizing that the power had gone out. She opened her door and peered out into the dark hallway.
  • Mom? What happened to the lights?
  • Not Sure, would you please help me with this?
  • What is it?
  • It's your sister's birthday present.
  • Joanie called her voice echoing through the house, that in the darkness now seemed so vast. Joanie felt a cold emptiness that permeated through the walls and ran down her spine. She peered down the stairs her senses adjusting; realizing her mother was walking up the stairs panting, heaving a heavy package with her.
  • Oh, that's so exciting!
  • _______________________________________________________________________________________________
  • Quiet, your father is sleeping. HAHAHAHA

  • Go grab the scissors from Aubrey's desk and open the package.

  • They lifted the heavy package up the stairs and dropped it in Aubrey’s room. It thudded onto the floor.

  • She groped the walls and kneeled next to the package and sliced the scissors across the top ripping through the tape and cardboard. Putting her hands on the flaps, she tore them open and leaned forward to look inside. She couldn’t make out what was inside of the package.
  • She pulled out her phone and switched on the flashlight, shining it on the present. As her eyes adjusted to the light, she saw the severed head of her father.
  • Her mother pulled her father's head out of the box. The flesh around his neck shredded, his trachea dangling, mouth agape, his hair matted with blood. His legs- cushioning his head- were separated from his feet, his shinbones protruding, his calf muscle ribboned, his feet drenched in blood. She felt a cold breath on her neck as the smell of metal filled the air and tears began to stream down her face.
  • I've got his head! You get his legs! We're going to put him back together in Aubrey's bed for a birthday surprise!
  • As she took in the grim scene before her, a look of horror spread across her face, and she realized she would never be the same again.
