Storyboard Text

  • Stella makes a point to make a cake, "In June, she baked her guilt into a lemon cake with vanilla frosting "(Bennett 167). Stella's action of making the cake shows that she was trying to make things right between her and Loretta. For once in the text, readers see Stella doing something that is not selfish.
  • What actions she takes.
  • What effect do they have on others
  • Stella has a huge impact on Jude throughout the years. Jude's sighting of Stella results in her losing her job, "Aw, it's all right," he said. "You'll find another job" (Bennett 209). Reese is trying to console Jude after she loses her job due to her fixation with Stella.
  • What is something the character cannot do?
  • Stella can not admit that she likes Loretta and that she is actually Black. In the text Bennett writes, "No one in The Estates knew what to make of it: Stella Sanders crossing the street to visit that colored woman" (Bennett 189). Instead of Stella actually owning up to it, she continues to lie to keep up her created life. This results in Stella's constant conflict.
