  • Larger livestock operations result in more of a concentration of animal wastes, Around 2 billion tons of manure is produced in the US each year.
  • Farmers are more likely to face lawsuits more now than in the past. They must dispose of animal waste in a safe, environmentally friendly way.
  • A farmer must be careful to avoid polluting the environment when applying manure to the land.
  • Liquid systems may use pits, lagoons, or storage basins for storing and handling manure. Handling as a solid may include the bedding of the animals as well.
  • Most animal manure is spread on the land. It is high in nitrogen so it is a very good source of fertilizer.
  • Feedlot runoff must be contained. A feed lot is an area where cattle are given high quality feed before they are slaughtered.
  • The five main ways to prevent runoff are diversion, drainage, debris basins, detention ponds and disposal.
  • Some people move to the country to get away from the city but don't think about the smells that some livestock operations may produce.
  • Some may try to take legal actions against farmers because of the odor,
  • Sometimes animals die unexpectedly and their bodies have to be disposed of quickly and safely.
  • If a domestic animal strays onto another person's property, it is called an estray and can be taken by the property owner. They have to make a public notice of it then wait a certain amount of time. If it is not claimed, it can be their's.
  • Most farmers are usually very conscientious of treating the environment gently, not only because it will give them more return for their investment, but because they are ethical. Ethical means doing the right thing, even if no one will ever know.
