  • A common question everyone asks is, how does the Internet work? I'm Sarah, and I'll lead you through an explanation of how Internet works. Also over here is my student and assistant, Jessica
  • Hi there!
  • It all started 50 years ago. It started with ISP: an Internet Server Provider, like Bell, Shaw, and Rogers. The lines that connect between them are called the Backbones
  • Rogers
  • Shaw
  • Bell
  • Then there would be several Servers connected to the Internet Servers. Like Google, Wikipedia, etc.
  • Yes, but most people won't know their IP Address, so they'll use something that is called DNS. Domain Name System "Phonebook". For Example, google.com. It's much easier to remember than an IP Address
  • Wikipedia70.3.121wikipedia.com
  • Each Server has an IP Address, which stands for Internet Protocol Address, for example 70.3.124, right.
  • Google
  • Isn't there also something called an URL, and it's other name is Universal Resource Locator and it's a technical name for a "website address"?
  • Yes, and have you ever wondered when we search something and we get a result; how it works? There is a large process, but it only takes about 1-3 milliseconds
  • It all starts by sending a request to the ISP, then it goes through Shaw, then Goggle, and to Bell where the information is.
  • You
  • Shaw
  • Google
  • Bell
  • Shaw
  • You
  • Then it goes back to Shaw, and to You. Wow! That's really cool.
  • You
  • It's about the same process for emails too. It starts by sending your email through Shaw, than Hotmail, or whatever email you use. Jessica, can you say the rest?
  • Yup, that's right.
  • Hotmail
  • Rogers
  • Google
  • Your Friend
  • Rogers
  • Sure, it goes through Rogers, than Google, back to Rogers, and to your friend.
