  • Meena was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. During her childhood, she attended a prestigious school, but her homelife was unstable. She witnessed the mistreatment of her mother by her father. It was then that she realized the need for rights for women.

  • Meena is now 20 years old, and she marries Faiz Ahmed; a doctor who is 11 years older than her. During this time, there is friction in Afghanistan. The Soviets have invaded Afghanistan in 1978. And Meena leaves Kabul University to pursue a goal.

  • After the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, women lost many of their rights. Meena realized that something needed to be done, and so she started RAWA. She would often wear a veil and burqa to visit families, and that is how RAWA recruited its members.
  • Meena travels to Europe
  • Both Meena and Ahmad started doing work secretly to oppose the Soviets. The Soviets started to become more brutal, and RAWA needed to be careful.
  • RAWA started their own handmade magazine and wrote to bring attention to the reality of life in Afghanistan in 1981. They secretly distributed this. RAWA also did other work to help in the fight against the Soviets, they did things such as supplying medical supplies and cleaning guns.
  • The magazine received international attention. Meena is invited by the French government. She tells her story and the stories of millions of others. She also meets with other important leaders in Europe.
