  • As agreed at the Yalta Conference, Germany and Berlin were divided into 4 zones, one for each Ally: Britain, France, the US and the USSR. However, in 1946, Britain, France and the US combined their zones to create Bizonia.
  • Berlin Airlift
  • As well as this, they created a new currency called the Deutschmark. This angered Stalin as the Allies did not consult him about it. It also made Stalin think they wanted to take over East Germany and Berlin.
  • Lifting the Blockade
  • Stalin felt he had to show the Allies that he would fight back if they encroached on the Soviet sphere of influence. On the 24th of June 1948, Stalin blocked roads, railways and canal routes into Berlin, stopping the Western powers reaching their zones.
  • NATO
  • If the USA tried to ram the roadblocks or railway blocks, it could be seen as an act of war, so Truman ordered that aircraft should fly supplies into Berlin.At the height of the operation, on April 16 1949, an allied aircraft landed in Berlin every minute.
  • TV
  • Stalin could not shoot the airplanes down as it would be seen as an act of war, so he eventually lifted the blockade in May 1949. This was a huge embarrassmentfor him.
  • At the height of the crisis, war between the USSR and the USA seemed a real possibility. The Western powers met in Washington DC and signed an agreement to work together, strengthening their bonds. The new organisation was known as NATO.
