- Oh how I hate Uncle Abdullah. I wish I had my mama and papa.
- At Safe Haven Orphanage...
- Well, hello there. Though our orphanage is full, we will take her under the condition that you do not come back to get her.
- I have children of my own to care for, and no time for this ugly, evil-tempered child with spots. Take her!

- As a young child, Michaela DePrince was orphaned in Sierra Leon- a war struck country. She was forced to live with her Uncle, who was a horrible and abusive guardian. He especially hated Michaela for the skin condition she has, causing her neck to have spots.
- Soon, Uncle Abdullah brought Michaela to an orphanage in a near by village. Here he gladly dropped her off; leaving her without any of her belongings in a foreign place.
- While at the orphanage, Michaela met Mia who helped her learn the ways of life in the orphanage and they became great friends.
