Melody and the Competition

- "Hurry Melody we're going to be late!"
- "I 'm so sorry sir but your flight has been delayed until 7:40. pm"
- "But the competition starts at 7:00 pm!"
- "We have to tell the other families."
- "Oh no, they went on an earlier flight and left without us!"
- Melody and her mom were starting to head out to the airport for the national Whiz Kids Competition. Melody's neighbor Mrs. V, her dad, and sister tagged along. While they were driving to the airport, Melody was feeling nervous. Mrs. V helped her to calm down by telling her she would do great.
- How could they do this to me, I was part of their team
- When they arrived at the airport, they had no trouble finding parking. They headed over to the check-in gate and handed over their tickets. The uniformed lady told them that their flight had been canceled. She told them that she can rebook them for the 7:40 pm flight. "But the competition starts at 7:00 pm," Melody's dad said.
- Why did you leave me here? I was part of the team.
- We're sorry, we were going to call you.
- "What about the rest of our group? They were also booked on this flight," Melody's mom said. "I remember them, they were here early in the morning and switched to a 9:00 am flight," the uniformed lady replied. "My daughter is on that team," Melody's Mom explained. "I'm sorry, there are no other planes to D.C until then," the gate agent responds.
- We all deserve it!
- We came in 9th place, you deserve the trophy.
- Melody and her family headed home. "Why didn't they call us? They had our number," said Melody. "How could they do this to me? No one even thought to call or text us!" Melody yells. Suddenly the phone rang, Melody's mom picked it up. It was Mr. Dimming, Melody's teacher. They chatted for a while before Melody's mom hung up. "Oh Melody, I'm so sorry. The rest of your team had breakfast together and didn't invite us. That's how they caught the earlier flight," her mom said.
- On Monday, Melody headed to school to confront her peers and teacher. "Why did you leave me?" Melody asked. Nobody said anything for a while until Rose spoke up. "We didn't mean to leave you. We just all went to breakfast and decided to head to the airport early," she said. "Then why didn't you call me?" Melody asked. Mr. Dimmings looked down, "I would have, but I was just so busy with everything else. "
- Suddenly, Connor stood up and handed Melody their trophy. "We came in 9th place, but you deserve the trophy. We're sorry." Melody stared at the little statue and started to laugh. Her hand hit the trophy and it fell to the floor breaking into several pieces. The rest of the class started to laugh as well. "We all deserve it," Melody said excitedly.
