- Hello there! My name is Kiki Rofael and I am a nursing student at TTUHSC. One of the most important roles I'm learning to perform is the role of patient advocate.
- Methodist Hospital ICU
- Hey Doctor, My patient is a Jehovah's Witness and does not want the blood transfusion. Is there any other available course of treatment?
- My hospital patients depend on me to advocate for them by keeping them informed and communicating their needs to their provider.
- Neuro ICU
- As a patient advocate, I help my patient understand their diagnosis and treatment plan in order to be more aware and take an active role in their care. This has been shown to result in more compliance with treatment plans and in overall improvement in length and quality of life.
- Since every patient has different circumstances, beliefs, and preferences, it is not uncommon for their wishes to conflict with doctor’s orders. As a nurse advocate, I will work with doctors to offer my patients alternative treatment solutions.
- In the hospital setting, I advocate for my patient by being a liaison between the patient and the provider. I keep the provider aware of patient condition and any changes that occur while keeping my patient informed of treatment options. I will be able to establish rapport with my patients when they feel that I have their best interest in mind.
