His group truly believed they could get away with hurting the giant, and have no deaths or consequences, they were sorely mistaken, and this leads to a not so good consequence with a death on their part.
Odysseus's actions decided his destiny. if he hadn't gotten cocky, there would be no way this could've happened, and they most likely wouldn't have been cursed, and would've made it back safe and sound. It was HIS fault he got cursed, not simple fate that pushed him back.
Odysseus and his soldiers are given a bag of wind, though only Odysseus knows that. His crew, very immaturely, opens the bag thinking it contains gold and riches, however a bag of wind opens them, forcing them back in their journey. This could've easily been avoided if they weren't selfish, and left it to fate.
