- I just saw my best friend get murdered...
- Is it wrong to not tell anyone I was the witness?
- He was just trying to help me...
- Should I tell him? What would he think?
- Starr witnesses a police officer, Officer Cruise, murder her friend, Kahlil, who wasn't doing anything wrong. He was complying with the officer, but when he asked Starr if she was okay, he was shot three times in the back
- I should have come forward sooner...
- I think that went well!
- Starr faces trouble after Kahlil's death, not knowing whether or not to speak to speak up about her side of what really happened the night Kahlil was killed. Starr's friend, Kenya, tells her that she needs to speak up and get justice for Kahlil. Starr starts to take action and creates a Tumblr page dedicated to Khalil. She also does interviews and starts to spread the word about what she witnessed.
- Starr doesn't know if her friends at her school would understand her position in Khalil's case. She puts off telling them, in case it would make her seem too "ghetto" for them.
- Starr testifies to the grand court on behalf of Kahlil. She did the best she could, so ultimately it was out of her hands. The jury decided not to charge Officer Cruise, and he was released back with no penalty. Starr was heartbroken, and she realized that all of the stories about people of color being unjustly killed by police were more than just stories, and they had a huge impact on the people close to the victims.
- In response to the court decision, people were rioting and protesting throughout Garden Heights. Buildings were being burned down and people were fighting in the streets. Starr, her brother Seven, her boyfriend Chris, and her friend DeVante get caught in the riots, and Starr finally retaliates against the police by throwing a tear gas bomb at them. As the group runs to Starr's dad's grocery store trying to escape the gas, a rival gang run by a man called King, lights the store on fire, trapping the kids inside.
- King's gang was turned in to the police, allowing people in Garden Heights to be at peace. Starr and her family move to a safer neighborhood outside of Garden Heights. Despite this, they are still an important part in the rebuilding of that neighborhood. Starr promises to always fight for what's right and always keep Kahlil in her memory.
