  • Chapter One: History of Aboriginal Spirituality
  • Hi, I'm Pocahontas and welcome to my village.
  • Today I'm going to be teaching you about my culture and beliefs, and what it means to be a part of Aboriginal Spirituality.
  • First I would like to inform you of the history of my people and where we came from.
  • There is no single founder of Aboriginal Spirituality, but the origin of my culture dates back to beyond 10,000 years ago.
  • A theory was presented by archeologists that my people migrated from Asia to North and South America by crossing a land bridge over the Bering Strait, approximately 35,000 years ago.
  • We then spread across this new found land and became known as the Indigenous people. Indigenous means "they came out of this ground," or ancient beyond record.
  • Now that our history lesson is done, how about a tour around my village?
  • Chapter Two: Important Beliefs
  • My home is full of wide open landscape and is shared with the wildlife around us.
  • Our beliefs can be described as Animism. Animism is the belief that all things, human or non-human, have spirits or souls, and that the person or animal on after death through the presence of that spirit.
  • We believe that we should respect all living beings because we all move in cycles and will return to the environment.
  • Elders, Shaman and our Chief are the most highly respected leaders in our culture, as well as The Great Spirit.
  • The leader of our people. The responsibility of ensuring the traditions, protocols, songs, dances of the community, which have been passed down for hundreds of generations, are respected and kept alive. They are caretakers of the people and the culture.
  • Chief
  • The Shaman is believed to have a spiritual connection with animals and all elements of nature. The Shaman helps members of the tribe to identify personal Animal Totems that are spirit guides who walk through life with them and sometimes appear in dreams or Vision Quests or on a Spiritual Journey in the form of an animal. Common roles that are shared by every Shaman, is that they are a healer, communicator, educator, prophet and mystic.
  • Shaman
  • Elders are the essential link to the past and to the future. Elders provide continuity and complete the 'circle of life' so that individuals, family and extended family and community view themselves, and subsequently behave, as a confident and complete whole.
  • Elder
  • The Great Spirit
  • The Great Spirit is a God-like entity of our culture. The Great Spirit is the God of creation, history and eternity.
  • Chapter Three: Sacred Scriptures
  • Kolet
  • Dorak
  • Alkira
  • Elders are the essential link to the past, so I believe that you, Elder Willow, can give us some insight on what some of our cultures Sacred Scriptures are.
  • I was just about to teach Alkira, Dorak and Kolet, about our culture. Have a seat and we will begin.
  • Teachings, rituals and traditions of our people have been passed down for generations.
  • When I was your age I was learning about our culture from an Elder. This is called Oral Teachings.
  • All the stories of creation and morality that you know were communicated through oracy. Sometimes we even use beads or totem poles to help retell an event.
  • Thank-you Elder Willow for your time.
  • It was my pleasure Pocahontas! It's important for you to learn about our culture because one day you will be teaching the young ones.
