It's about finding out our heritage. Can you help me?
Oh really? What's it about?
Hi Annie! How was school?
Gullah? What's that?
You should ask your grandma. She knows much more about it then I do. She's in the living room.
Our heritage? Well that would be Gullah.
Hey Grandma!
Well I wanted to learn about our heritage, Gullah. Do you think you could help?
Of course! Here, have a seat.
Hello dear! What's up?
Gullah, also known as Geechee, came from the Sea Islands. The people were enslaved Africans from West Africa.
Enslaved? what does that mean?
Oh :(
It means that they made slaves and were forced to work.
They had foods such as yams, okra and watermelon, arts and crafts like basket weaving and making nets, and they brought music too. They also brought their farming knowledge along too.
Wow, they knew how to do a lot of stuff!
But even though they were taken out of their home country, they still brought their culture with them.
Did they speak a different language, since they came from another country?
Oooh, okay.
Yes, they spoke Creole. which is a mix of different languages.
