- The ship crashes on Aeolia
- Aeolus gifts Odysseus bags of wind
- The shipmates open the bag of wind
- Odysseus and his shipmates arrive at Aeolia, home of Aeolus, the king of the wind. They stay with him for a month.
- They arrive at the Land of Laestrygonians
- Before they leave, Aeolus gifts Odysseus a bag of winds; one containing westward winds to blow them to Ithaca, and the other with stormy winds.
- The remaining men sail to Aeaea
- Odysseus and his men sail to Ithaca, and they are so close that they can see it. However, when Odysseus is sleeping, his men open the bag, thinking it was gold that Odysseus was hiding from them. The wind blows them off course, leaving no wind left to travel back to Ithaca.
- They stay at Aeaea with Circe for a year
- They have no other option but to row to the nearest island, leading them to the Land of Laestrygonians, who are cannibals. They eat some of the men, but they manage to escape and sail to another land.
- They arrive at Aeaea and meet Circe, a nymph, who feeds a potion to Odysseus's men, turning them into pigs. Odysseus calls Hermes for help, explaining that he'll need to find a plant to reverse the potion and that he must stay away from Circe.
- Odysseus makes Circe swear an oath that she won't harm his men anymore. They then stay on the island for a year, living with Circe's riches, but under her control. Circe later tells Odysseus that he must go find "The Land of the Dead" where he can meet and speak to Tiresias.
