  • ON A TRAIN, 1941 DECEMBER 13TH
  • My name is Hana Fuchigami. I was born here, in the States; we are from California and as much American as the ones who have taken us. Tonight we are being brought to a camp called 'Rowher' but i don't know where it is I've never heard of it before. My father he is old, and also doesn't speak much english even though we've been here 25 years. We had to leave almost everything, my job, our apartment, everything. I don't know what we are supposed to do for however long we are trapped.
  • Before we were brought to the train i knew what would happen the minute those soldiers came. I have seen the news. We are not the first to be taken. Stories are being whispered, and none are nice. Wire fences as tall as a building, small houses or even pig pens. There are children here-....I am worried. I havent told father. Not yet. Not tonight. Tonight we'll sleep.
  • There have been some amazing moments. We weren't just captives, we were communities as well.
  • 1945.12.08. We've now been here for almost 48 months a full 4 years; there's been so many incidents, from when in the beginning families were being shoved into small housing- Even today we share ours with a couple who's almost older than Father. Our home is halfway across from the bathrooms and right next to the mess hall.. It can be almost a jailhouse at times,.It's almost Christmas which means loudness and smells but sometimes i think it's the one thing keeping many of us going so I would not trade it in a lifetime. It at least brings people some normalcy. I haven't gotten the chance for that in a long time, i don't think many of us have. People have been talking of a man who is coming around the camps, a lawyer. He sets the families who are about to be deported free and gets them out as well. Hopefully we can get him to come soon.
  • TIME SKIP: 1946, JANUARY 23RD
  • Today we leave. After 4 long years. Everyone is leaving, and we are one of the last. We are all finally going home.
