Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming

Lesson Plans by Oliver Smith

One of the biggest challenges our students' generation will face is climate change. For many years, scientists have linked the increased average global temperatures to the increased amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. These gases act like the glass in a greenhouse—letting radiation through, which warms the planet, but not allowing the heat to escape. The following activities will help students understand how this process works, and the actions they can take to help.

Storyboard Text

  • RISING OCEAN TEMPERATURE
  • RISING SEA LEVELS
  • The temperature of the ocean is rising due to melting ice and thermal expansion.
  • The average sea levels are rising as a result of the melting ice and thermal expansion. This rising sea level could cause coastal flooding.
  • ADÉLIE PENGUINS
  • EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
  • MELTING POLAR ICE
  • The amount of space available to the Adélie penguin has decreased, leading to fewer penguins.
  • As average temperatures increase, polar ice is melting.
