  • Xerxes got mad at the Athenians to help the Ionians revolt. Darius the Great the Persian King defeated the revolt. Darius's son Xerxes took over after his father died. He assembled a force to defeat the Greeks.
  • Battle of Salamis
  • In 490 B.C.E. the Persian fleet of 25,000 men rode across the Aegon and landed in Marathon. There were 10,000 Athenians that were there waiting for them. In 546 B.C.E. the Persians conquered the Sea and then the war began in Ionia on the coast of Anatolia. The Ionians revolt and Athens helped the Ionians by sending ships to support the revolt. Darius the Great defeats the revolt. There were a total of 6,200 men lost. 6,000 were Persian men and 200 of them were Athenian men. Pheidippides brings the good news and raced 26.2 miles to get there, but after he delivered the new he died.
  • Battle of Plateau
  • In 480 B.C.E. Darius's son Xerxes assembles a force to defeat the Greeks. As Xerxes came to a narrow mountain pass in Thermopylae 7,000 Greeks (including 300 Spartans) blocked the way so he couldn't get through. The Greeks stopped it for 3 days and then the Greeks held the Persians back while the others forces retreated. Athens abandoned there city and then Xerxes set fire to Athens and sent warships to block both ends of the canal.
  • Consequences/outcomes
  • In 480 B.C.E. the Greeks defeated the Persian fleet off the island of Salamis. The Greeks won and gained the victory and this proved the turning point of the war, for Xerxes. He returned to Asia with the ships that survived and the majority of the land troops.
  • It took place in 479 BC. It was the final battle during the Persian invasion of Greece. This battle was fought between an alliance of the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire, Xerxes. The Greeks won and gained victory and it ended the war. Xerxes lost 1/3 of his fleet and lost the battle of Plateau.
  • The Greek city-state alliances wanted to defeat the Persians and successfully drove them out. The war ended and the consequences of it was that now the city-states felt free. The city-state that mostly felt this way was Athens. Around 470 BC Athens leads the Delian league. Athens used their power to control other league members. There were 200 city-states and in time they became little more than provinces of Athens.
