- "My sister was growing up before my eyes" (Sebold 144). As Susie has realized, Lindsey takes on the role of a mother, due to the fact that theirs hasn't been acting like one lately.
- "Buckley," she said, "let's go back upstairs. You can sleep in my bed" (Sebold 143).

- Even though Mr. Harvey was the one who killed Susie he had the audacity to say this to Mrs. Salmon, which was very misleading. He felt no remorse whatsoever.
- "I hope they get the bastard. I'm sorry for your loss" (Sebold 8). "I heard about the horrible, horrible tragedy. What was your daughter's name, again?" (Sebold 8).

- "She was, in all her obnoxious finery, dragging the light back in" (Sebold 100).
