Before the 4th Ice Age, there was a species of worm called the yellowworm.
Ahhh! A talking worm!
Once the Ice Age struck, the food for the Yellowworm became scarce due to the extinction of many organisms living in the soil. This led to the majority of the Yellowworm population to die off.
This set of traits caused a distinct separation in the food they ate, the areas they lived in, and the organisms they mated with, causing speciation to occur. These newly adapted organisms are now called Yellownewts.
C'mon! We need to go find some food!
Noooo! My friends are frozen!
Once all of the ice melted, all of the food and nutrition were located in the marshy ecosystem making it nearly impossible for the Yellowworm to consume their food. This almost led to the complete extinction of the Yellowworm, but luckily...
After many centuries, once the ecosystem returned to its former status, the Yellownewt's adaptations allowed them to thrive on both land and in the water.
I can't find any food!
The food is all under the soil, but it's too moist to gather any!
...This specific individual experienced genetic variation, and because of this, the Yellowworms went through evolution to have greater aquatic abilities ultimately improving their fitness!
I could never imagine being a Yellowworm!
Those Yellownewts over there are so luckly to be able to eat underwater!
I know right!?
I'm so happy here!
The seafood here is great!
I'm glad that we can eat both types of food!
