- Another guy named Burn Sanderson came by looking for Old Yeller. He said that he was one of his dogs. Just as he was about to ride off with Old Yeller, Burn realized that the family needed this dog so he made a deal. If Mama would make a good dinner for him they could keep the dog. So they did and he let them keep him. Burn also told Travis that there was a spread of hydrophobia in the Salt Licks. If any animals acted odd, shoot them.
- While Travis was marking the hogs, one hog pulled him down, and another hog then slash him in the leg. This was so painful that he started screaming and Old Yeller came and started fighting off the hogs. This was his chance to run, so he did. He then tripped and fell into some pricks that stopped him in his tracks. Then he remembered Old Yeller saved his life so he went back to look for him. The hogs were gone and Old Yeller was at the bottom of a ditch. Travis knew he had to go back and get Mama so he dragged a fallen tree and coved up the ditch so he wouldn’t try to follow him.
- Travis had gotten Mama to go back to Old Yeller after his leg was fixed. When they got to Old Yeller, Mama stitched him up and brought him home. They were both in very bad condition but they would recover.
- - Bud Searcy and Lisbeth stopped by to see how they were doing and they were very surprised about the hog cut. If they knew they would have came earlier. Lisbeth brought one of Miss Prissy`s pups. She said it was the best one. Mama was so busy that Bud said that Lisbeth could stay and help out. Mama tried to argue against this but Bud wouldn’t listen. Travis and Mama were wrong, Lisbeth was actually really helpful around the house and they were grateful.
- One of mamas best milking cows, Spot, has gotten sick and nobody knows why. This was bad because Spot has a calf and the calf could not get any milk from Spot. Then a bull with hydrophobia came charging at Arliss and Lisbeth. Old Yeller then got the bull to come towards him. Even though Old Yeller was hurt the bull still could not catch him. Travis then got his gun and went to where he could not miss and shot. After the bull was dead they had to burn it because if varmints ate it they might spread the sickness. So they burnt it as far away as possible.
- Now that they burnt the bull they have to do the same with Spot. Mama, Lisbeth and Old Yeller went to burn her while Travis stayed and watched Arliss. After sunset Travis started to feel uneasy because they still hadn’t returned. Just as he was going to go out and look for them he heard a recognizable voice saying “Travis, make a light and get your gun!” There was a mad wolf and fighting it off was Old Yeller. Travis couldn’t get a good enough shot on the wolf until the wolf bit Old Yeller. Travis knew that when the wolf released he had to shoot. He shot and the wolf fell. Travis was relieved until Mama said “It was a good thing for us, but not for Old Yeller.” Then he realized that the mad wolf had bitten Old Yeller. He called Ole Yeller over, put his rifle to his head and pulled the trigger.
