  • Motif: Deception
  • "Shall I hear more of shall I speak at this?"
  • “Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet.” (2.2 38-39)
  • Romeo and Juliet on Juliet's Balcony
  • What man art thou that, thus bescreened in night, So stumblest on my counsel? (2.2 56-57)
  • Juliet is able to almost lie to herself and refuse to look at Romeo as a Montague. Juliet just looks at Romeo as an individual, and doesn't connect him to the family that hers is fueding with. In this case, Juliet finds that lying to herself is the best answer because then she is able to be with the one that she loves.
  • Act 1 Scene 5
  • "Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." (1.5 59-60)
  • Juliet is willing to hide her identity as a Capulet to because not being a Capulet would mean that she would be able to be with Romeo with no complications. Being deceptive about her identity would work out because then she wouldn't have to worry about their fueding families.

  • "This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss." (1.5 104-107)
  • Romeo at first doesn't tell Juliet that he is there and that he is listening to everything that she is saying because he wants to continue to listen. This ended up helping both Romeo and Juliet because Romeo now knew that Juliet was involve with him, and then they decided to plan their marriage.

  • "My only love sprung from my only hate!Too early seen unknown, and known too late!"(1.5 152-155)
  • Romeo is being deceptive to himself about love. Moments before this scene, Romeo was getting over being in love with another women, Rosaline, which means that when he is talking to himself about how Juliet is the first person he has loved, he is lying to himself.
  • Romeo and Juliet are both being deceptive about who they are, and are falling in love not knowing that both of them are from each other's enemy's side. If one of them would've came out at the very beginning, and made it known what family they were from, the two probably wouldn't have ended up falling in love.
  • Since Romeo and Juliet both were deceptive about who they were, Juliet did not know that Romeo was from the family of her enemy. Juliet is upset that she has fallen in love with him and wishes that had known who he was earlier.
