- The Revolutionary War is over, but now the new country is in war debt.
- We can't pay for the war! We must think of something!
- We can ask the states to donate some land! We can then sell it for profit to new settlers!
- Wonderful idea!
- Meanwhile in North Carolina..."life is hard living west of the Appalachia. We are constantly fighting the Cherokee. We need protection!"
- We can't help the frontiersmen. Let us donate the land to congress. The Cherokee can become their problem!
- Our people will not leave. This land is ours and we will fight for it.
- We don't need North Carolina! We can take care of our own problems!
- We shall be our own 14th state! We will call ourselves the State of Franklin!
- Wait! Congress is selling our donated land for profit? And the Frontiersmen are trying to become their own state? We will take back our donation of land at once!
- We are prepared to fight for our state of Franklin. We will ride to Congress and seek the votes to make Franklin the 14th state!
- The states have voted. Franklin will not be recognized as a state with only 2/3 of the vote. Two more states needed to vote "yes."
- For four years Franklin operated as its own state. They never had paper money, but they had their own constitution, laws and even performed marriages. John Sevier was Governor and was paid 1,000 deer skins a year!
- I am honored that you named your state after me, however, only 7 out of 13 states voted for Franklin.
- We don't need Congress to recognize us! We will still operate as our own state anyway!
- The end of Franklin...
- Tensions between North Carolina and Franklin resulted in a brief battle. John Sevier was forced to give up the state of Franklin and pledge his allegiance to North Carolina. Thus becoming the lost state of Franklin forever.
- Here is one fun fact about the lost state of Franklin...Davy Crockett was born in the state of Franklin!
