Ava Anderson is a 12 years old chronic worrier girl that lives in Upstate New York with her family that consists of her mom, dad, younger sister Emma and her grand father.
One day while anxiously looking for a pen to use at for her math test, she finds an old pencil in their junk kitchen drawer and throws it in her back pack to rush to school.
While she scribbles the question on her math test paper, when she writes a question in the margin of her math quiz and then she hears a clear answer in a voice no one else seems to hear. She tells her friend Sophie and together they start using the pen to get answers for all their random questions
When the pencil reveals a scary truth about Ava's family, she realizes that sometimes the bravest people are the ones who live without all the answers. In the process, she surprises herself at what she is able to do when she decides to face her fears
