- Mateo
- It is the year 2014, and Mateo is 23 years old –- a recent college engineering graduate in the United States who has secured a position as a quality control manager at Exploitron Inc. from a referral from his friend Jacob. This is 20 years after NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico) was established.
- It's 8:30, I should get going to work... Better to start Monday early.

- Jessica, I want the prototype for our new product done by next week. Also, come up with ideas that could make our products seem more desirable than they actually are, but don't be too obvious.

- I should speak up more...
- Mateo has been working at Exploitron Inc. (in New York City) for a little over a month now, and has noticed that the workplace environment is a bit authoritarian – he never hears any dissent and everyone immediately follows the bosses’ plans without offering any ideas of their own during meetings. Mateo, too, is admittedly guilty of this as well, as he hopes to maintain a good relationship with his boss, Robert, even if the company plans may be a bit questionable; however, Mateo does nervously sometimes speak up and ask questions if he feels someone is a bit off. This leads to discomfort from Mateo and since this is his first real job (albeit he has had internship experience prior), he is unsure whether all companies have this sort of tense workplace environment, or if this is unique to Exploitron Inc..

- It’s a Monday morning, and Mateo, as the quality control manager, has a role in overseeing the production of goods and he is walking to his office (getting daily Monday news along the way) issued by his boss. Usually, on Tuesdays, there is a standup meeting where the boss (who has a hybrid work schedule) comes into the office to discuss plans moving forward.
