Jacob explains how the company had already been moving jobs from the United States to Mexico prior to this, and that this statement means they will probably quickly speed up this process. Being Mateo’s friend, Jacob is empathetic and explains how even though this is obviously a bad practice for human health, they shouldn’t complain in case they are fired. Plus, perhaps more profit means a raise for both of them?
Yeah. I mean, no one told you about this? Exploitron Inc. has been doing this for a while now -- looks like they're going to quicken the process. I'm not saying I support these practices because workers are at a high risk, but it makes us profit, y'know? A raise for both of us would be nice! You don't want to get fired by complaining, do you?
Is this what the company has become..? I don't want to argue with my friend, but I simply can't allow this anymore.
Mateo questions why he wasn’t made aware that this was already happening, but he already knows why: he was purposely left oblivious so that he wouldn’t start complaining, given his behavior where he sometimes questions the boss when no one else does. Jacob, who even though had expressed my feelings earlier, didn’t seem genuine. Mateo is a bit disappointed in his friend Jacob, to see him essentially dismiss the exploitation of workers so he can earn a raise of maybe a dollar an hour. Mateo knows that he himself has to be the one to act, because clearly no one else will (not even his friend from college). Luckily for Mateo, the standup meeting with the boss is tomorrow: a golden opportunity.
Did the boss forget to tell me? No -- this was intentional. I was left oblivious because Robert knows of my tendency to question his plans. If I don't speak up, as Robert intends, then it makes it seem as though everyone is in agreement. I thought Jacob knew better than to allow this to happen for who knows how long. I guess this predatory work environment really has an effect on people's morals.
At the standup meeting, Mateo wastes no time in addressing the statement (goal 4) in the document given to him from his boss, Robert. Robert dismisses the comment, clearly not used to being objected to so directly.
Robert, I just wanted to briefly discuss goal 4 on the document I received yesterday, about moving labor to Mexico in order to reduce costs. Have you considered the ethical ----

Bahh! This isn't what the meeting is about. I thought the statement was self-explanatory. Anyways, Jessica, about the prototyping project I gave you last week...
