  • Oh, did you already buy that crib we saw at the children's store?I found your mom's old crib. It's in pretty good condition.
  • Thanks, but we decided co-sleeping would make things easier.
  • Oh... I don't want to overstep, but according to the CDC on a study done in 2015, about 3,500 babies in the US died due to sleep related deaths. Co-sleeping has been noted to increase chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Well other countries, co-sleeping is normal, including Sweden and Japan. Japan also has some of the lowest SIDS rates around the world. They its believed that mothers should stay close to provide protection and care.
  • Something else I found interesting is, according to Lynelle Schneeberg Psy.D., your baby may not be able to fall asleep without you in the future. There have been studies done that have shown children who co-sleep, have higher risks for pre-adolescent behavioral problems including anxiousness and depression.
  • Well, its been observed by James McKenna, the director of the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Lab at the University of Notre Dame, that physical contact in co-sleeping, helps babies to maintain a more stable body temperature, breathe more regularly, and experience less stress.
  • What about your sleep?! Dr. Schneeberg also observed that you may not get the quality of sleep you need to function.
  • Thanks for sharing that with me Grandma. However, its believed co sleeping also promotes bonding with parents to create a strong relationship and bond. That is the most important thing for our family. I don't mind loosing a little sleep if it means a stronger bond with my child.
